Robredo Makes it 1-1
Twenty-one-year old Tommy Robredo, currently ranked 19 in the world,
justified his position of number one player in the Spanish team and
levelled the score in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first
round tie between Czech Republic and Spain at 1-1. He beat Radek Stepanek,
ranked 49 in the world 75 36 76(4) 76(7) in the second singles of the first
day's play in the exhibition hall in Brno.
As in the first match between Jiri Novak and Rafael Nadal, which Novak won
in straight sets, the decisive moments of the match came in the tiebreaks.
Robredo showed his experience and also enjoyed some good luck. The Spaniard
won four successive points from 3-4 in the tiebreak to win the third set and
then did not allow Stepanek to convert any of his three setpoints in the
fourth set tiebreak.
"The fourth set tie-breaker when I was 4-6 down was really pretty difficult.
But the tiebreaks were not the only important moments on such a fast surface
the return game is pretty important, too," Robredo said.
The statistics tell a lot about this match - both players only lost serve
once in 3 hours and 30 minutes; Stepanek served 19 aces, Robredo 13; and
while Stepanek made 102 unforced errors Robredo made 90 of them.
"102 errors? If a 205 km/h ace is an unforced error, than it could be,"
Stepanek said.
"I don't care much about these numbers. At first I think it is hard to
count which were the unforced errors on this fast surface and then the
most important for me is a victory. If I do 200 unforced errors in a match
and I win, I am satisfied," Robredo said after his only second Davis Cup
singles match.
As a first time number one in the Spanish team, he came on court after the
defeat of his compatriot Rafael Nadal.
"It was pretty hard for me but I tried not to think about the score before
the match. Otherwise I wouldn't have a lot of confidence," he added.
He handled the fourth set tiebreaker very well. At one point Stepanek
thought he had won the set but the linesman called Robredo's forehand
good and the setpoint was saved.
"I don't want to say that I lost because of the linesmen but I think that
they affected the final part of the fourth set," Stepanek said.
Both players are nominated for Saturday's doubles, which starts at 2 p.m,
with Stepanek due to partner Jiri Novak and Robredo scheduled to team up
with Nadal, and both are ready.
"If the captain wants me to play on Saturday and on Sunday I will play,"
Robredo said.
The winner of the tie in Brno will play the winner of the Netherlands v
Canada tie in the quarterfinals.
