Angry Ferrero has not given up hope

SEVILLE, Spain, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Out of form and out of favour, Spain's Juan C
arlos Ferrero could barely hide his disappointment at being used as a bit-part
doubles player in the Davis Cup final against the United States.
Dropped from the singles in favour of 18-year-old Rafael Nadal, the former worl
d number one was called on to play doubles with Tommy Robredo against the Bryan
twins Bob and Mike.
Ferrero and Robredo slumped to a 6-0 6-3 6-2 in just 98 minutes at Seville's Ol
ympic Stadium on Saturday, leaving Spain 2-1 ahead.
Asked if he had been hoodwinked into playing the doubles, Ferrero said: "If I s
ay yes to the question, of course that would not be good for the team.
"Let me just say that I am here. I am part of the team. The first day it was no
t considered appropriate that I play and it was considered appropriate that I p
layed today in the doubles match because Rafael is tired and because he had a v
ery long match yesterday.
"That's the answer to the question."
Nadal vindicated coach Jordi Arrese's decision to select him for the singles on
Friday, beating world number two Andy Roddick.
Ferrero could not hide his disappointment at being dropped, however.
"Yesterday was disappointing to me to not play in this fantastic stadium, you k
now, with all the crowd supporting us," he said.
"But today I wanted to play because it's one more point to Spain. But, of cours
e, I knew that this is very difficult to play against the Bryans and to win aga
inst them."
Ferrero has not given up hope of featuring on the singles court.
As things stand, Carlos Moya is set to play Andy Roddick and Nadal is set to pl
ay Mardy Fish in Sunday's reverse singles, needing one victory to clinch the Cu
p.
"I will do anything for Spain," Ferrero said. "And we'll see tomorrow what's go
ing on. I don't know if I will play. Captains, we'll see what they do. We'll se
e who is going to play."
While to recall Ferrero would be a major surprise, Arrese refused to rule it ou
t.
"Tomorrow is fully open," he said. "All our choices for tomorrow are fully open
."
