Massu Upsets Sanchez
Gaudio and Blanco were tied at a set apiece when their match was suspended
for darkness.
Chilean clay court specialist Nicolas Massu advanced to his second
consecutive ATP quarterfinal with a 6-4, 6-3 win over eighth-seeded
Spaniard David Sanchez at the CAM Open Comunidad Valenciana Wednesday.
After beginning the year with four consecutive first-round losses,
Massu has won nine of his past 12 matches, which includes a run to
the final of the $100,000 Bermuda Challenger at his last start. He
reached the Casablanca quarterfinals three weeks ago.
Earlier today, Spaniard Fernando Vicente defeated Anthony Dupuis in
three sets, while Flavio Saretta beat Frantisek Cermak. No. 4 seed
Gaston Gaudio of Argentina and Spaniard Galo Blanco were tied at a
set apiece when their match was suspended due to poor natural light.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Massu: "I played very well today, very solid. In the second set I
was down 2-0, but then I broke back to make it 2-1. What followed
was a long game with 10 deuces. I saved six breaks of serve."
"Consistency is very important for a tennis player. I have been
able to play consistently over the last weeks. I started the year
in Vi禃 del Mar and suffered several first round losses. I'm very
happy where my tennis is right now. Since the tournament in Miami,
I have really improved. I have noticed very important changes in the
level of my tennis over the last month.
On playing Vicente:
"We last played in Casablanca. It was a very tough match and I am
expecting the same on Friday."
Sanchez: "I had chances to win the match. I think Massu found
the victory without looking for it. He had the key to the match and
seemed in control of its destiny. I really wanted to do well here in
Valencia and perhaps that added extra pressure on my shoulders. It
was a big mental blow when I failed to convert six break points
leading 2-1 in the second set."
Vicente: "I already played against Dupuis before. He hits the ball
extremely hard and with a dry and fast court, there weren't many
rallies. I was really making him determined to beat me."
"I didn't feel comfortable out there, but I fought my way through
the match."
On his next opponents:
"I don't care who I play in the quarterfinals. I know I have the
game to beat them. Furthermore, I am playing at home. I am happy
to be playing well here than any other tournament. It's a very
important tournament for me."
Saretta: "The first set was long and quite close. The conditions
were different today. I was playing on centre court for the first
time. The weather was overcast and windy."
"As predominantly a doubles player, Cermak knew he couldn't stay
behind the baseline and play the rallies from there. He was coming
up to the net a lot. Because he's used to playing doubles, I don't
think he was used to moving around the court as much."
"I am very glad to have won the match, but I don't think I found
good rhythm out there. I am not happy with the way I hit my strokes."
On his next opponents: "I'm going to be playing against Gaston Gaudio
or Galo Blanco. I've never played a match against either of them but
I know their games well. I have watched them play and practiced with
them on occasion."
