Corretja calls time on his career

Former world number two Alex Corretja has announced his retirement after
struggling to overcome an eye injury.
The 32-year-old Spaniard has not played an ATP event since April 2005 and
has called a halt to a 16-year career in which he won 17 singles titles.
"I am retiring with the tranquility that I have given 100%," he said.
"I appreciate the recognition people still show to me. I think this is very
special and I am very happy with all I have achieved as a tennis player."
Horst Klosterkemper, chief executive of the ATP Europe, paid tribute to
Corretja, who was twice voted winner of the ATP's sportsmanship award.
"Alex embodied everything a 'star' stands for - class, integrity, charm,
enthusiasm, hard work, commitment and great sportsmanship.
"On behalf of all his friends at the ATP, we wish him the best of luck and
hope that he remains very involved in tennis and the ATP."
Corretja's highlights as a player were twice winning the ATP Masters Series
events and helping Spain win their first ever Davis Cup title over Australia
in 2000.
He also spoke out in defence of Briton Greg Rusedski when he tested positive
for nandrolone in February, 2004.
