Rios on Fire
Chile's own Marcelo Rios will meet Spain's David Sanchez in Sunday's final.
Chile's native son Marcelo Rios is now only a match away from claiming his
first title at the Bellsouth Open by Rosen in Chile. In the featured semifinal
on Saturday night, Rios quickly dismissed top seed Argentine Gaston Gaudio 6-3
, 6-2, improving his record against Gaudio to 3-0. This is the fourth time,
Rios has reached the final at this event, but he has yet to capture the
winner's trophy in his home country. He is seeking his 19th career singles
title.
In Sunday night's final, Rios meets Spain's David Sanchez, who battled past
fellow Spaniard Albert Montanes 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-1 in an earlier semifinal. This
is the first time Sanchez has reached an ATP final. But along with the crowd
support sure to swing in Rios' favor, Sanchez is battling tendinitis in his
wrist.
Also on Saturday, unseeded Argentines Agustin Calleri and Mariano Hood captured
the doubles title, defeating the experienced Czech team Frantisek Cermak and
Leos Friedl, the No. 2 seeds, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Rios: "I've always played well against Gaudio, so today was no different."
"The feeling on court was fantastic, I played at a very high level. I didn't
expect it. From the start of the tournament, I had a feeling I could win it,
and now I'm even closer to doing that."
About playing Sanchez:
"I played him last year in Palermo, and it went to three sets. He doesn't have
any big, big weapons, but the ball always comes back into the court. He's a bit
injured, but I can't pay attention to that because he's in the final, so he
must be playing well."
Sanchez: "I'm very happy to be in my first final. Tomorrow I could claim my
first title, so I'm looking forward to it. I've beaten Top 10 players before,
so I know it's possible. I'm learning more and more, and now I'm much more of
a solid player."
About his match against Montanes: "It was very hot today, and Albert returns
every ball, so it was difficult. But I managed to come through."
