When Collis Temple, a Spur for 24 games in the 1974-75 ABA season, visited
Las Vegas for the NBA Summer League tournament last July, he collared anyone
who would listen and preached a message straight from a proud father's heart.

A Spurs team that won its titles with a defense-first approach signed Temple
to a 10-day contract off the roster of the D-League's Rio Grande Valley
Vipers on March 23, then made it a deal for the remainder of the season when
the 10-day expired.

It is Temple's skill and courage at the offensive end that has taken the
Spurs' coaches somewhat by surprise. After the rookie made 3 of 4 on 3-point
shots and scored 11 points in Saturday's win at the Nuggets, head coach Gregg
Popovich pointed to Temple's line on the box score and said, “We may have
found one.”

Indeed, Temple has been a timely find since second-year combo guard George
Hill suffered a strained peroneal tendon in his right ankle in the Spurs'
victory over the Lakers on April 4. Thrown into the starting lineup while
All-NBA point guard Tony Parker eased his way back into a rhythm after
missing a month with a broken bone in his right hand, Temple has made 15 of
29 shots, 7 of 13 from 3-point range, and averaged 11.3 points in four games
as the Spurs' starting point guard.

Temple isn't sure how long his stint as a temporary starter will last. Parker
played nearly 31 minutes in Saturday's big victory and may be back in the
stating lineup soon, perhaps as early as tonight's game against the Minnesota
Timberwolves at the AT&T Center.
