Spurs may deal top pick again

馬刺制服組們在過去的這一年之間穿梭往返於國際之間，致力於球探任務。
他們花了無數的時間觀看某些球員的錄影帶--要唸這些球員的名字對大部份
的美國人而言並非易事。他們也出席了數場高中級的球賽，甚至傳言指出制
服組亦曾駐足於一座或兩座大學體育館。
對於馬刺隊，以及大多數的NBA 球隊而言，這一切是為了選秀會做最充份的
準備。這是例行的程序。
但是，事實上，對馬刺而言，利用第一輪選秀權選一名新秀，並非他們例行
的程序。
在過去 13 年當中，馬刺隊僅三度使用第一輪選秀權為隊上添得戰力：Cory
Alexander(No. 29 in 1995)、Tim Duncan (No. 1 in 1997)、Tony Parker
(No. 28 in 2001)。
因為馬刺的第一輪選秀權往往位於末段，所以他們通常會將這枚選秀權拿出
去交易，換得即戰力（Antonio Daniels、Speedy Claxton、Dale Ellis 及
Sean Elliott），或是換來未來的選秀權。
今年，馬刺將帶著三個選秀權光臨即將到來的星期四選秀會，這些選秀權分
別是：第一輪倒數第二的第 28 順位，以及兩枚第二輪的選秀權（52 與 57
順位）。這個 52 順位的選秀權是兩年前夏天自灰熊那兒換來的。

優先目標是與 Manu Ginobili 續約。而Bruce Bowen 與 Hedo Turkoglu 也
都是自由球員。

指出，Malik Rose 於星期二遭山貓隊選中的機率是相當低的。
Varejao 與 Khryapa 這兩名球員很有可能在更高順位為他隊所選，若馬刺
仍鍾情於他們，也唯有透過交易了。
兩年前，由於沒有球隊願意給Varejao 一紙第一輪選秀的保障合約的跡象，
於是他退出了該年選秀會，但在那之前，馬刺便對他表示過興趣。他去年也
以同樣的緣故退出了選秀會。但接著，在波多黎各舉行的奧運資格賽中，於
面對美國隊的比賽中獨砍了 16 分。
21 歲的 Varejao 是一名頗具運動能力的球員，他在場上跑動的能力很好，
但投射方面還有進步空間。 上個球季，他在 F.C. Barcelona（歐洲職業球
隊）效勞，繳出了平均 7.5 分、4.4 籃板、49.1 % 投籃命中率的成績。假

而同樣也在過去兩年的選秀會前夕退出的Khryapa，則是為 CSKA Moscow 效
力了兩年。 享有無私、以團隊為主評價的他，在上個球季平均有 6.5 分與
3.6 籃板，此外也幫助球隊闖進了歐洲聯賽的最後四強。據報導，買斷他的
合約只需廉價的 35 萬，這也讓他很容易可以加入選中他的 NBA 球隊。
馬刺對於一名來自法國的 18 歲七呎中鋒有興趣，但他在上個星期退出了選
秀會。他想要再增進自己的球技，以期來年能進軍樂透區。Petro 就讀的是
與 Parker 同一所發展學校 INSEP。而他下一年將進入與 Pau Orthez 四年
合約的第二年--這是一支法國最高水平職業聯盟的球隊。
兩年前，馬刺希望能將一名他們鎖定很久的南斯拉夫籍的中鋒帶回家，但卻
只能眼睜睜地他在兩個順位之前便為籃網隊所選。該年，他們只好將選秀的
球員交易出去，換回了Claxton，而 Claxton 也成為了 2003 冠軍陣容中不
可或缺的一員。
馬刺在上個球季的選秀會之前耍盡了心機。他們故意測試了一些自己沒什麼
興趣的球員，而卻始終不曾測試他們最想得到的球員-- 那是來自 Westbury
Christian High School 的前鋒 Ndudi Ebi。
這樣的舉動並未收到成效。灰狼隊也是用了優先於馬刺兩順位的選秀權選走
了 Ebi。最後馬刺只能選了 Leandro Barbosa，並以之與太陽交易獲得了未
來的第一輪選秀權。

Comparison: Drew Gooden
Strengths: A very active bigman, good athlete with excellent size,
agility. Improved dramatically in the past few years. His jump shot
has really developed lately. Very creative offensive player, with
soft touch. Solid shot blocker, rebounder. Lets the game come to him,
and takes instruction well. Very charismatic personality, similar
(surfer) attitude to Brazilian tennis star Gustavo Kuerten, very
laid back, but not to the point where he isn't motivated. Has the
versatility to play the small forward position at 6-10.
Weakness: Still learning the game and has moments of inconsistency.
Still seems to be "growing into his body" and figuring out his
abilities.

Notes: A native of Brazil. Varejao has entered the past two
drafts, but has withdrawn his name at the last minute. The
Spurs wanted Varejao in 2002, but he felt that he could go
much higher in the draft if he returned to Europe and tried
again in 2003. At one point in 2003, he was considered a
potential lottery pick. A lack luster effort in the Euroleague
Final 4 and a huge buy out with Barcelona killed his stock
last year. Had a great game versus the Team USA in the Olympic
qualifying tournament scoring 16 points and dunking on Jermaine
O'Neal. Averaged 13 ppg for the tournament.
Upside: A very active, energetic forward who runs the floor,
crashes the glass, dives for loose balls and is really all
over the court. He's a good athlete, though not a great leaper.
His offense is still pretty raw. Has developed a nice jumper
over the last 18 months and has shown some three point range.
A pretty good defender.
Downside: He doesn't appear to be the type of guy who could
ever average more than 10 ppg in the pros. He just doesn't
have enough go to moves to score consistently in the league.
Scouts are baffled over why he isn't a better rebounder or
shot blocker considering his length and activity on the floor.
Insider Projection: At this point, Varejao is a little under
rated. Some scouts still swear that he's one of the better
international prospects in the draft. Others think that he'll
never develop into anything more than a role player at best.
Right now the consensus is that he's a late first rounder or
early second round pick. A lot will depend on who actually does
and doesn't stay in the draft.
