Spurs Training Camp
NBA training camp begins on Tuesday, October 5th. The San Antonio Spurs
will have nine players returning from the 2003-04 squad. Newcomers to the
team include draft picks Beno Udrih and Romain Sato, as well as veterans
Brent Barry and Tony Massenburg. Small forward Linton Johnson III and
point guard Marque Perry will also be in camp, hoping to solidify a
roster spot.
Johnny Ludden of the Express-News is reporting that the Spurs are
signing University of Texas standout James Thomas to a partially
guaranteed two-year contract. The 6-foot-8 Thomas played for the Portland
Trailblazers team at the Rocky Mountain Revue this summer and finished
second in rebounding. Ludden reports that the Spurs are also working out
deals to bring 7-footer Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje and Angolan guard Valter
Monteiro into camp.
That would bring the total of players in Spurs camp to 18. Each NBA team
is allotted 15 roster spots during the season. The Spurs were hoping to
leave one roster spot open for the possibility of signing power forward
Karl Malone, who has yet to reveal his decision about playing next season.
