The reading passage discusses the issue of nullification, which was faced by
the United State in the history of the country. In the listening passage, the
professor gives an example of nullification. In 1828, the federal goverment
passed the law to put more tax on several imported goods. One of the southern
states refused to pay the tax. The president at that time sent trops to impose
the law. Then, the federal goverment promised to lower the tax, and the state
goverment was willing to pay the tax.
The reading passage describes the formation of the Solar system. The vast
majority of gas and dust in the cloud clump together to form the sun, and the
rest of the material formed the planets with a layered structure. In the
listening passage, the professor explains how the layered structure came to be.
One theory is that the core of the planet formed first, and then the lighter
materials came to the surface. The other theory is that all materials clump
together to form a planet, and then these materials seperated into layers.
