我查Merriam- Webster電子字典
presume
v.t. (1) to undertake without leave or clear justification
(2) to expect or assume especially with confidence
(3) to take for granted
assume
v.t. to take as granted or true
我只節錄被拿來比較的部分
從presume的第一跟個第三個解釋看起來
presume好像比較有"擅自"做假設的意思
或是比較個人的主觀判斷
就連第二個解釋都是 with confidence 而不是 with proof
assume就沒有特別去強調"擅自"或"主觀"的意思
純粹就是假設
而assume還有另一個常用的意思: to pretend to have or be
就是"假裝"的意思
以上是我個人的看法

presume當不及物動詞的時候還有dare的意思
e.g. He presumed to compare himself with you.
他竟敢與你相提並論。
It would be presuming to camp in a person's yard without permission.
不獲允許就在別人的院子裡露營是一種放肆的行為。
