Climate change will create millions more refugees -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Severe water shortages caused by climate change could create millions more environmental refugees, a new Tearfund report highlights. Calls to limit air travel and a proposed climate change bill to cut UK carbon dioxide emissions has kept climate change in the headlines. Tearfund’s Feeling the heat report says there are currently some 25 million refugees who have been forced to move as a result of environ- mental problems. http://tinyurl.com/yj6e8g Image: One in six people in the world don’t have access to clean water. With increasing climate change leading to desertification, altering rain patterns and floods and storms, millions more will be forced people to leave their homes in search of water. The report cites examples of people who are already on the move because of water-related problems. Many Mexicans are leaving their homeland and risking death by illegally fleeing to the USA because of poor crop yields. Farmers in Nigeria are being forced to move to cities as the desert advances at 1,350 square miles a year. But Feeling the heat also gives examples of how communities, with the help of Tearfund partners, are learning to cope with unreliable water supplies. These initiatives need more support and an approach to water management that takes into account all of the different uses and pressures on water. Tearfund’s response The report says urgent action is needed to tackle the cause of climate change and to help people deal with the effects on water resources. Tearfund is asking governments to agree to the following at the UN climate change conference in Nairobi in November: 。 produce a timetable for agreeing the next phase of the Kyoto Protocol, and focus on setting tougher targets 。 provide urgent funding to help poor countries adapt to climate change 。 make management of water resources an urgent priority within efforts to adapt to climate change Tearfund and several of our partner organisations will be at the conference to lobby on behalf of poor communities. Get involved at the 4 November event Ahead of the conference in Nairobi on 4 November, Tearfund supporters and thousands of others will be gathering in Trafalgar square at the I count rally to press for stronger action on climate change. The rally will be highlighting the need for more urgent political, as well as the need for individual action on climate change. There's a chance to pray for governments and for those facing the impact of climate change at a service before the rally, at 12:30 at St Martin's in the Fields, led by Tearfund UK President the Bishop of Liverpool and worship leader Andy Flannagan. http://tinyurl.com/ybzpds Image: Climate change hits the poorest hardest. Severe drought has pushed nomadic communities in Niger, West Africa, closer to the edge of survival. Tearfund partner Jemed helped teenager Hadija (pictured) resettle in their traditional pastureland, but climate change threatens to destroy their way of life. Tearfund’s Andy Atkins says, ‘One of the most devastating impacts of climate change is on the water supply. In some parts of the world, floods, storms and poor rainfall are beginning to have catastrophic effects, threatening the lives and livelihoods of millions of people.’ There are huge numbers of environmental refugees and the situation is predicted to get worse; there is no better time to get involved in Tearfund’s campaign on climate change.
