Micron Holds Off on Joining Taiwan Chip Plan

Micron Technology Inc.'s quarterly net loss narrowed on lower charges, as the
chip maker said it doesn't see a reason to join a Taiwan government plan to
aid the struggling chip industry.
Micron, based Boise, Idaho, has suffered along with foreign rivals from an
oversupply in memory chips, used in everything from computers to iPods and
digital cameras. Cuts in manufacturing capacity have helped to stabilize
prices recently, but demand remains depressed. Currently, the Taiwan
government is in talks with Micron as part of a plan to help the industry,
but Micron believes that for now it would be better to go it alone.
"We're still in discussions with the Taiwan government," said Micron Chief
Executive Steve Appleton in a conference call Thursday.
A tie-up with Taiwan through its newly created memory chip company, known as
Taiwan Memory Co., would likely involve Micron providing access to its
intellectual property for an equity stake in the company.
By doing so, Micron could gain access to the sizable cash injection Taiwan is
planning to make into the industry, but at this point, Micron doesn't see a
deal as beneficial.
"We're not in a position today where we need to get an equity investment from
a foreign entity and then have to turn over our technology," Mr. Appleton
said.
The company reported its ninth-consecutive quarterly loss. For the fiscal
second quarter ended March 5, Micron lost $751 million, compared with a loss
of $777 million a year earlier. Revenue dropped 27% to $993 million.
