HOW can you resist making fun of a name like Tender Huang?

Taiwanese actor Tender's former colleagues certainly couldn't.

'Whenever they see me, they sing Love Me Tender,' he said.

You would expect a guy with a name like that to be a nice guy (and have a thick
skin). And he was certainly a good sport, despite all the questions about his
name.

'Don't worry, just ask away,' he said, smiling widely and tapping this reporter
on the arm.

So, is he a tender guy?

Yes, to his friends and family. Not so much romantically, was his reply.

'To lovers, I won't say nice words or give gifts often,' he said. (He's
currently unattached.)

You can probably guess what his most tender body part is.

He said: 'It's my heart. I'm a sensitive person. To other people, I may feel
things, but I won't say it out loud.'

You could say he's Tender by name, and tender by nature.

So why did he give himself a name like Tender?

No, it's not because he thinks he is a softy, but it's what his Mandarin name
sounds like in English.

Although he now goes by Huang Tenghao, his birth name was Huang Tengde. Tengde,
Tender.

He changed it because it looked too serious for entertainment.

But since he has already changed his Chinese name, why not just give himself
another English name?

'Because I think there won't be another guy with the same name, or with a more
special name,' he said, laughing.

The 28-year-old was speaking at last Tuesday's press event for Anna & Anna, a
movie about a woman who switches identities with her doppelganger. It stars
Karena Lam as the titular characters.

Tender plays her Singaporean musician boyfriend.

'Luckily, she was very patient (with me) since I'm still green,' he said, of
his acting abilities.

To immerse himself in the character better, he turned to Singaporean singer
friends A-Do and JJ Lin for advice.

They told him about dialects and the way Singaporeans mix Hokkien and Malay.

Tender had known them from his former career as a hairstylist. They were his
clients.

Anna & Anna is his first leading movie role.

Nowadays, he no longer does hair, though he said every so often his hands would
'itch' and he would offer to cut other people's hair.

He was encouraged by friends in the entertainment circle, he said.

'Anyway, I will always have yi ji zhi chang (Mandarin for useful skill) with
hairstyling, I won't starve in the future,' he said.
