Serena's focus on Aust Open

SERENA Williams has pulled out of next month's Hopman Cup in Perth so she can be ready for the Australian Open, tournament organisers said today.

The world No.3, who has not played competitively since winning Wimbledon back in July, had been due to partner James Blake to defend the crown the pair won last year.

But Hopman Cup director Paul McNamee said today that world No.5 Lindsay Davenport would replace Williams in the United States' team.

"Serena regrets not being able to come back and defend her title, but we have a wonderful replacement in Lindsay Davenport," McNamee said.

The Hopman Cup tournament seedings will remain the same, with the United States at No.1 and Australia at No.2, organisers said.
