Roger was born on the August 8, 1981 as the son of Robert and Lynette Federer
in Basel, where he still lives near. There in the local club he first played
tennis, aging 3.
A Star was born! Soon it was obvious that little Roger was very much talented.
To improve his skills as fast as possible, Roger, then 14 years old, diecided
to move to the National Swiss Tennis Center in Ecublens / Lausanne. There he
practiced under in a good environment and went to school as well. He graduated
in French. It was not long before the first successes on national and
international level came up.
He was Swiss Champion in every age category. And, as one of his milestones as
a junior player, in 1995, he won all his matches in the Orange Bowl with a
double bagel, 6:0, 6:0! Three years later Roger won the title at the 1998
Orange Bowl and became the Number 1 in the worldwide Junior Tennis. He started
in the open category.
In 1998, he rose up 399 positions in the ATP Ranking. In 1999 he moved 237
positions up and in December he was the youngest player in the top 100 (ATP 64)
by the age of 18 years and 4 months! Dunring this year he reached the
quarterfinals of Vienna, Basel, Rotterdam and Marseille.
The year 2000 was Roger's first year as a settled top player. He still could
not win his first title, but did play his first finals in Basel and Marseille.
At the Olympic Games in Sydney he became 4th after a though loss against
Arnaud Di Pasquale. Year 2001 began as the "Roger Federer Year". In February
he won his first title in Mailand.
His credo is: "It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice!"
