PARIS (Reuters) - Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, winner of back-to-back tournaments in Moscow and Lyon this month, is in danger of missing the Davis Cup final against Russia at the end of November.
A statement from the French Tennis Federation at the Paris Masters on Monday said that the 20-year-old's injury was more serious than first thought.
Mathieu pulled out of the Bercy tournament on Sunday after injuring himself while training with world number one Lleyton Hewitt on Friday.
The statement said that a scan on Monday confirmed a serious abdominal muscle injury and also a rib injury. He will undergo an X-ray on Tuesday.
French Davis Cup team doctor Bernard Montalvan said: "The abdominal injury will force him to rest for two to three weeks but if damage is found to the rib bone then he will need to rest for five weeks."
Mathieu was part of the French squad that beat the United States in the semi-final at Roland Garros, although he did not play.
The Davis Cup final will be held in Bercy from November 29 to December 1.
