Mathieu pulls out
France's Paul-Henri Mathieu has pulled out of the Australian Open with
a lingering groin injury. "I won't play the Australian Open, I have
made up my mind. My groin injury requires a longer break than I
expected," he said on his website.
Mathieu was injured when he resumed playing after the bitter
disappointment of losing the decisive singles against Russia's Mikhail
Youzhny in the Davis Cup final last month.
The 20-year-old won the Kremlin Cup and the Lyon Open in October and is
one of the players to watch in 2003.
The first grand slam of the season in Melbourne starts on January 13.
