Players Escape Unhurt from Rome Hotel Fire
Andy Roddick was among 30 ATP players to escape unharmed from a Rome hotel fire
which claimed the lives of three guests. Roddick and other players in town for
the Telecom Italia Masters were evacuated from the Hotel Parco dei Principil
ai Parioli around 5 a.m. Saturday.
A Canadian couple died from smoke inhalation and an American died when he fell
to his death trying to escape the flames by tying together pillowcases and
trying to scale his way down.
News reports said that Roddick helped to evacuate guest from the hotel roof.
Other players to be evacuated included Marat Safin, Tommy Haas, Nicolas Massu,
Max Mirnyi and Mariano Zabaleta.
ATP communications director Nicola Arzani said that a number of players lost
racquets and equipment in the blaze. “Safin lost his equipment and couldn’t
practice. He couldn’t practice today. Thankfully all the players staying at
the hotel made it out unharmed. But they were saddened to learn that three
people had died in the blaze.”
Writing on his web site, Tommy Haas said: “"We didn't know where the fire was
in the hotel," he said. "So I ran downstairs from the fifth floor. The smoke
was getting stronger and stronger. I had a hard time breathing. Later, we
realized that the fire was on the fourth floor. The air was getting better
when I reached the third floor. ... I felt like I was in a bad movie."
The Nation claimed that Paradorn Srichaphan was woken by his father and coach
Chanachai, who was staying on the third floor where the fire broke out.
Chanachai lost his luggage and passport in the fire.
Chanachai told The Nation: “I was awakened by noises but didn't bother about
it until I smelt smoke in my room. When I opened the door, I saw fire, so I
grabbed a towel to cover my mouth and rushed to the lobby. Paradorn was
sleeping (on a different floor) when I called him to get downstairs.”
