The biggest thing to hit the ATP Tour in 2001, "A-Rod" is the first genuine
American prospect since the Sampras/Agassi/Courier generation. The world
junior number one in 2000 has done what many of his predecessors have failed
to do - convert youth level success into main tour titles. He made a name for
himself by beating Pete Sampras in March, then clinched his first Tour title
in Atlanta. The Nebraska-born player proved that victory was no fluke by
winning the following week in Houston. Another title in Washington in August
cemented his place in the top 20 - a meteoric rise from a player who had
begun the year ranked at 160.
Not afraid to show his emotions on court, Roddick's game has the enthusiasm
and exuberance of youth yet he is also able to keep his nerve under pressure.
His match against Lleyton Hewitt in the quarter-finals of the US Open was one
of the season's highlights and hints at an entertaining rivalry with the
young Australian in the years to come. Although he is not yet out of his
teens, it seems a safe bet that he will be challenging for Grand Slam titles
before long.
