Srichaphan wins his first ATP title in Asia
After reaching Chennai final last year, the Terrific Thai goes one better
危險的泰國人^^
Paradorn Srichaphan, one of the hottest players on tour at the end of 2002,
continued his stellar play Sunday in the final of the Tata Open 2003 in
Chennai. He easily dispatched veteran Karol Kucera 6-3, 6-1, thereby winning
his third ATP title since last August 2002. Srichaphan, who was a finalist at
the Tata Open one year ago, is now 9-1 in Chennai the past two years. He next
plays in the adidas International in Sydney.
Srichaphan:
- Third ATP title in five months (Long Island - August, Stockholm - October,
Chennai - January)
- Wins his first ATP title in Asia
- Is 9-1 in Chennai the past two years
- Is now 3-2 in ATP tournament finals (l. to Canas, Chennai and l. to Blake,
Washington) - Has gone an impressive 20-3 in his last 5 tournaments
- Takes home $52,000 and will be tied for second in the ATP Champions Race when
the standings come out on Monday
- Faces Scott Draper in the 1st Round of the adidas International next week in
Sydney
"I have been working hard in the off-season, and after I lost the final here
last year, I really wanted to win in Chennai."
"In the beginning, it looked like it was going to be a long game, because both
of us were being really careful. But I started moving well, and was just
trying to break him, and in the second set I felt really comfortable, and I am
happy to win here."
"Last year, it was my first ever final, so I was a little bit nervous. But now
, this is my fourth or fifth final, so I am used to it now, and I feel a lot
more confident."
"Kucera is a great player, he reached the final, but I played better today and
won."
Kucera:
- Played in first ATP final since winning in Basel in 1999 (d. Agassi)
- This was his 11 career ATP final with a record of 5-6
- Kucera is now 7-2 in Chennai the past two years
- Takes home $30,600 and 24 ATP Champions Race Points
- Kucera has finished in the top 100 in eight of the past nine years
- Last year he was 74th in the ATP Champions Race
"Today was a very difficult match for me, I was playing [in my first] final
after a very long time."
"I had problems from the beginning, I couldn't hold my first serve. I thought
I lost the match when I started losing my first serve early. But I have to give
him credit. He was very focused on the game, and played each point hard. I
had to play my best tennis to beat him, but I couldn't concentrate. I really
wanted to fight back, but I couldn't find the right focus."
"But I want to come back, last year I reached the semis, this year I reached
the final, so I definitely want to come back and try and win here in Chennai.
"
Doubles Final

doubles title came in Umag, Croatia, last year when he partnered with Cermak.
