1993
Finished as the No. 1 junior player in the world in 1993, winning the U.S.
Open Junior singles title. Also represented Chile in the Davis Cup.
1995
Was the first Chilean to finish in the top 25 since Hans Gildemeister ranked
No. 14 in 1979, also won first ATP Tour title with a victory in Bologna.
1996
Became the first Chilean to reach the top 10 and the first South American
since Ecuador's Andres Gomez in 1991.
Won at St. Polten, Austria in May and recorded runner-up finishes at
Scottsdale in March and Barcelona in April.
Finished the year ranked No. 11 in the world.
1997
Won title at Mercedes Super 9 stop in Monte Carlo and had four runner-up
finishes.
Only Tour player to reach fourth round or better at all four Grand Slam
events (best finishes were quarterfinal appearances at Australian and U.S.
Open.
Went 6-1 in five-set matches and 6-0 in Davis Cup singles.
1998
Beat Andre Agassi to win the Lipton Championships and claim the ATP No. 1
ranking, ending Pete Sampras' 102-week reign as the men's top-ranked player.
He was the first South American to be ranked No. 1, which he held for about
six weeks during the year.
Reached his first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open. Also reached the
quarterfinals of the French Open.
Led Tour with seven titles in eight finals and was co-leader (with Agassi) in
matches won with 68. Earned a career-high $3.42 million.
1999
Injury-filled season that resulted in a drop in the rankings (to year-end No.
9), but still managed to win three tournaments (Hamburg, St. Polten and
Singapore) and reach the finals in two others (Monte Carlo and Shanghai).
Only appeared in two majors, but advanced to quarterfinals of French and
fourth round of U.S. Open.
Compiled a 27-7 record on clay (third most wins on the Tour).
2000
Battled injury much of the season and failed to advance to at least a
quarterfinal of a Grand Slam for the first time since 1996. Won just two
Grand Slam matches (both at U.S. Open). Skipped the Australian and Wimbledon,
and went out in first round of French.
Lone victory came on the clay at Umag in July.
Reached two other semifinals (Hamburg and Toulouse) and finished season with
a 29-23 record.
2001
Won first tournament of the year in Doha by defeating Bohdan Ulihrach 6-3,
2-6, 6-3.
