Rios highest seed remaining after departures of Andy Roddick and Guillermo

DELRAY BEACH, FL - In only his first hard court tournament of 2003, Marcelo
Rios has reached the quarterfinals at the International Tennis Championships
in Delray Beach. The Chilean survived the South Florida heat and the big
serve of Martin Verkerk of The Netherlands to escape with a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5
victory. "This was the first time I've seen him play," Rios said. "He has
a big serve and a good backhand."
Rios, who accepted a wild card to play this week after reaching the finals
in Vina del Mar and quarterfinalist in Acapulco, recovered after dropping
the first set to Verkerk and found a way to counter the Dutchman's huge
serving.
"I don't think I was playing that bad," Rios said. "He just wasn't making
mistakes. It was frustrating that he was playing better than me."
Playing in temperatures that have reached the low 90's this week, Rios has
now reached the quarterfinals in all three tournaments he's played this year.
The Chilean now has a 9-3 record on the year.
Rios' opponent in the quarterfinals will be Hyung-Taik Lee, who defeated
Switzerland's Michel Kratochvil, 6-2, 6-3. The 27-year-old from Seoul,
Korea won his first ATP title in Sydney in January and has not dropped
a set in his two matches this week in Delray Beach.
"I've really got my confidence up from my win in Sydney," Lee said.
"Physically, I feel fitter than I did at this point last year. So I
feel like I'm playing some of my best tennis."
