Announcement follows three months of quiet contemplation for the 14-time
Grand Slam winner.

Pete Sampras has not played a tournament match since winning his 14th
Grand Slam title at the US Open in September. And tennis fans across
the globe have been waiting and hoping that the seven-time Wimbledon
champion would return for another year.

After much speculation by the tennis and sports press during the past
three months, Sampras told the Los Angeles Times yesterday that he will
be playing in 2003.

"I'll start in February in San Jose," he said. "And then go right from
there to tournaments in Scottsdale, [TMS] Indian Wells and [TMS] Miami."

While he announced that he would skip the Australian Open next month,
his plans include the other three Grand Slam tournaments: Roland Garros,
Wimbledon and the US Open. The last time Sampras missed the Australian
Open was in 1999, after which he went on to win four ATP titles and a
record-breaking sixth Wimbledon crown.

Along with the three Grand Slams and the early season American hard-court
circuit, Pete Sampras has also committed to the U.S. Men's Clay Court
Championships in Houston this April.

Sampras, who made his decision last week that he would continue playing,
said the announcement has been a relief. "Now that I've decided that I'm
announcing it and letting people know, it feels good," he said.

But Sampras told the LA Times that he did not want 2003 to be seen as a
farewell tour. "I'm just going to see how it goes, just kind of ride he
wave and see how far it take me."

The announcement ends months of public speculation and tennis-fan
discourse over the competitive future of one of the sport's great
champions.

The last time Sampras had addressed the media was on the heels of his
US Open victory, when he said: "I'm gonna have to weigh it up in the
next couple months to see where I'm at. I still want to play. I love
to play. But to beat a rival like Andre in a major tournament at the
US Open, a story book ending, it might be nice to stop."

After that, Sampras withdrew from the rest of the season's fall indoor
tournaments. Wife Bridgette gave birth to a baby boy, Christian Charles,
in late November.

    果然不出所料，澳網不打，而選擇在美國加州的聖荷西（離他家近）
復出..........morsten兄.......我和你聊天時的預測準吧:p（真希望想明牌
也能這麼準:p）

    言歸正傳，2003年應該會是Sampras的最後一年，而且我覺得到時他會不會
打美網要看溫布頓的情形而定。如果溫布頓贏了.........那還需要再打嗎？
但要是打太糟了........進軍美網還能保證有今年的場景嗎？加上Sampras是非
常需要有目標去追求而來維持鬥志的，他還能夠累積對大滿貫的渴望程度嗎？
我是很懷疑啦！且今年美網的結局是在很完美，很難再有更好的句點了，不如
成為美網傳奇吧！不要再去打了。

    至於我的建議是：希望Sampras打完溫布頓後就宣布退休。這會是一個比較
好的退休時點。

個人認為Sampras 2003年的賽季是否成功有幾個關鍵點：

1.家庭與事業的兼顧
毫無疑問地現階段他的家庭占的重要性，但是其實自2001年以來也是他的家人一直支持
他堅持下去、是他最大的心靈依靠之一；Agassi就曾說過他的職網生涯如今能維持得如
此出色家庭是一大助力(而不是讓他失去鬥志，當然Graf是前球后也有關)，個人認為家
人全心的支持是讓他再作出再繼續比賽決定的原因之一。


2.目標
其實自2000年創下破記錄的13座大滿貫之後，Sampras的心態不若以往積極是事實
(如同98年創下連續6年年終球王之後覺得疲憊不堪、階段的轉換、需求也不同)
不過今年的美網之後，個人覺得恐怕他這個"尷尬期"也將隨之而去。創記錄13座就夠了
不需要14座，現在的他有了家庭、小孩也出生了，應該是尋求自己人生另一頁的開始，
再為自己、家人作些什麼值得留念的。


3.體能與信心狀態
這就不用多說了，他的體能狀態的確遠不如他的巔峰期，但信心也是一個很重要的問題。
他的一些技術並未消失，只是體能、信心問題讓他無法發揮，而且也真的不可能再像年
輕時一球接一球的打出最巔峰的表現。體能我想再差也不會差過02年賽季的平均值^^;;
要保持不再往下掉應該還是辦得到…信心的乾旱則應該巳經度過最艱難的時期了。擇賽參
加當然還是必要的。

至於什麼叫成功？再拿一個大滿貫？名人賽？巡迴賽？個人覺得Sampras自己本人"滿意"
就好。03年的輿論也不太可能會再像前二年那樣給予他無情的壓力，因為他巳經證明了
31歲的他還能辦到。如果他還熱愛球賽、熱愛競爭，個人覺得倒不如抱著一種欣賞一個
史上最偉大的網球員之一的心態去看他，還在場上比賽就是一種珍貴的資產。至於他的心
態積極與否？當我看到他要換掉他用了17年的舊wilson拍子…個人覺得他對於比賽一點也
不消極。

[路透倫敦電]美國公開賽冠軍桑普拉斯(森柏斯/山普拉斯)將至少再參加
一個賽季的ATP巡迴賽，但將放棄明年1月舉行的澳洲公開賽。

31歲的桑普拉斯9月份在紐約稱雄美國公開賽，結束了持續兩年的冠軍荒，
拿下職業生涯第14個大滿貫冠軍稱號，締造了男子網球的歷史紀錄。

他在紐約獲得成功後，退出了今年餘下的ATP賽事，這使得有關他即將退役
的傳言不絕于耳。

「我將于2月份在聖何塞開始比賽，」他在洛杉磯時報(LosAngelesTimes)
的官方網站上說。「然後我將參加斯科茨代爾、印第安泉以及邁阿密的賽事。」

「我知道，隨著時光一周一周地流逝，我已經沒有當年排名世界第一時的狀態了。」

洛杉磯時報網站的報導稱，桑普拉斯由于缺少備戰時間而放棄了澳網，
但他準備參加法國公開賽、溫布爾登(溫布頓)錦標賽和美網。(完)
