Also, won the title at Kitzbuehel and reached the final in Bournemouth. 1999 Took three titles: Estoril, Gstaad and defended Kitzbuehel and finished the year as the No. 1 Spanish player. 2000 For the first time in five years, ended the season without winning a title but still finished the year in the Top 30. Had a 3-2 Davis Cup record in singles to lead his country to it's first title. In doubles, won the bronze medal at the Sydney Olympics with Alex Corretja. 2001 Finished the year outside of the top 30 and only reached one final. Lost in the first round of the French Open to Julien Boutter in five sets, making his earliest exit since 1994. Had his best result at the U.S. Open reaching the fourth round. 2002 At the French Open, eliminated both 2001 finalists -- three-time champion Gustavo Kuerten and best friend Alex Corretja -- before advancing to the final where he defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-1, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
