Having withdrawn from his semi-final match in Marseille, it was far from
certain that Nicolas Escude would make it to Rotterdam to defend his title.
In retrospect, this fear was unfounded. "I withdrew to prevent my injury
from getting worse. Mind you, I did feel my hamstring during today’s
match" explained the Frenchman after beating Albert Costa 6-3 6-3.
The Spaniard was unable to match Escude, who only experienced difficulties
during his first service game. "My service improved after that, and all
went well until the last game, when I again experienced some problems"
said Escude, who won here in 2001 and 2002.
The Frenchman managed to break his opponent’s service during the fifth
(3-2) as well as the ninth game, taking the first set 6-3. During the
second set, Escude broke at 2-1, giving him a comfortable buffer. Albert
Costa did have a chance to break the Frenchman’s service in the ninth
game, but let the opportunity slip. Nicolas Escude went on to win the
second set 6-3.
Escude looks forward to his second-round encounter with Richard Krajicek.
"I think it will be a difficult but exciting match. We both play a
service/volley game, so I reckon we are in with an equal chance." To
date, the players have met twice, winning one match each. Their last
encounter was three years ago at the Australian Open 2000.
