Greg Rusedski put his foot down — then realized he had to step out of the Australian Open. The lethal-serving lefthander announced today he has withdrawn from the Australian Open as well as two tune-up tournaments — Doha and Sydney — due to his injured right foot, which has not fully recovered from surgery in October.
“The foot has not reacted as well as I would have wanted," said Rusedski, who made the decision to withdraw after a practice session in Doha. “I practiced in London for two weeks and got here (Doha) early, but as soon as I put more stress on it, it was not good."
While the 29-year-old Rusedski has targeted a return to tennis in February, his doctor said a complete recovery might take five months. The 1997 U.S. Open finalist initially injured his foot during September’s U.S. Open. Rusedski said an extensive schedule of playing and traveling combined to take a toll on his foot.
“We have too much tennis and too many changes of balls and surfaces and I am not 21 anymore," Rusedski said. "With the traveling and so much tennis, that's what causes injuries and you have to be clever with the scheduling. I felt the injury when I was coming down on the heel after serving and if you take the serve out of my game it takes an awful lot away."
The Canadian-born British convert came under criticism in recent days for pulling out of Great Britain’s first-round Davis Cup tie against Australia scheduled for February 7-9th.
Today, Rusedski defended his decision to withdraw saying he wasn’t sure his body could withstand the rigors of best-of-five set matches played on clay courts and wanted to give British Davis Cup captain Roger Taylor sufficient notice to select a replacement.
“Last time when I pulled out of the Davis Cup I told the team management two weeks in advance, but I felt that was quite short notice," Rusedski said. "I wasn't sure whether I could play more than three sets by the time the Davis Cup came along and I wanted to alert the captain well in advance." Top-ranked Lleyton Hewitt had described Rusedski’s Davis Cup withdrawal as “weird”. Rusedski dismissed Hewitt’s remarks as essentially ignorant.
”I think I know my body better than he does," Rusedski said. "He doesn't know the whole story or the situation. If you don't have all the information it's pretty hard to assess it."
Since losing to Patrick Rafter in the 1997 U.S. Open final, Rusedski has failed to reach a quarterfinal in any other Grand Slam tournament — a streak of 19 Slams without surpassing the fourth round. The man who owns the ATP Tour record for fastest serve at 149 mph, believes he can make a successful return to tournament tennis after regaining his health.
“My first goal is to get 100 percent fit and then I want to win as many tournaments as I can," Rusedski said. "Of course I think the Davis Cup is important but in future I will have to look at what's best for myself. I still think I have a lot of good tennis in me. Once I get over this little bump I hope to have a few more years left."
