Rusedski tells Hewitt to butt out
Greg Rusedski had a sharp riposte for world number one Lleyton Hewitt while becoming the latest in a sequence of injury-triggered withdrawals from the one-million-dollar Qatar Open.
Rusedski has also pulled out of next month's Australian Open, joining fellow Briton Tim Henman on the sidelines for the first Grand Slam of the season.
The Canadian-born Rusedski, who had surgery on his right foot in October, travelled to Doha but following a few days of practice decided he was not fit enough to compete.
Hewitt reckoned it was "weird" for the former world number four to try to play on the ATP Tour in January and yet pull out of the Davis Cup tie against Australia in Sydney in February.
"I think I know my body better than Lleyton," replied Rusedski. "He hasn't undergone two foot surgeries. When you haven't got the gist of the whole story it's pretty hard to make an assessment. I think I am the best judge of the situation."
Rusedski also had words for the media who have been critical of his Davis Cup absences.
"When I gave two weeks' notice (of missing the tie against Thailand in September) I got a terrible time in the press, and now I have given two months' notice I am still getting difficulties," he complained.
Earlier Sunday, British number one Henman did leave open the possibility that he might be fit in time for the Davis Cup match.
Rusedski, whose withdrawal from the Doha tournament followed those of Tommy Haas, Sebastien Grosjean, Thomas Johansson, Marcelo Rios, Nicolas Kiefer and Paul-Henri Mathieu, admits he may not compete again until the four weeks of hard courts tournaments in the United States in March.
He may also avoid the European clay court season in April and May which he missed last year.
"The doctor warned me it might take five months (after the operation on October 7th) and I may try to come back in Milan or Marseille next month but it may take longer," said the 29-year-old former US Open finalist.
"We have too much tennis and too many changes of balls and surfaces and I am not 21 any more. All this and the travelling is what causes the injuries."
Rusedski's withdrawal was good news for the top-seeded Roger Federer and his first round opponent Jan-Michael Gambill.
The dangerously hard-hitting double-handed American has been promoted to the eighth-seeded spot, leaving the Swiss player with an easier-looking first round match against Andrei Stoliarov, a lucky loser from Russia.
