Henman's smart move
In comes Paul Annacone who coached arguably the greatest player of the modern
era Pete Sampras to eight major singles titles in six years.
The British number one had been travelling without a coach since splitting
from Larry Stefanki in September, but even after his win at the Paris Masters
in November, he realised that going solo was not an option.
It was at this time that Annacone received his first call.
And while Annacone was seen at the WTA Tour Championships in Los Angeles on a
one-week trial with Jennifer Capriati, it amounted to nothing.
A LEARNT LESSON
Having watched Andy Roddick surge to the top of the world rankings on the back
of winning the U.S. Open with new coach Brad Gilbert, the world number 15 has
made a 'telephone' arrangement, slightly more concrete.
Two months ago it seemed Henman knew "how to hit tennis balls," refusing the
services of a full-time coach, but the appointment of the former world number
12 on a part-time basis shows intent.
Henman realises that at this stage of his career the prospect of winning a
major - particularly at Wimbledon - are diminishing.
But to have a confidant, motivator and experienced voice courtside could make
the difference between a good career and a great one.
Annacone's first role is to travel to England for nine days winter training
before their first appearance together at the Australian Open beginning on
19th January 2004.

Something tells me Tim Henman and Paul Annacone are going to get along just
fine.
As a player, the American was aggressive, looking to charge to the net whenever
he could.
Off court he was a popular player who, like Henman, was keen to contribute to
many different aspects of the sport.
Annacone first got the call during the Basle tournament in October.
Defeat to David Nalbandian had knocked Henman's confidence and, after splitting
with Larry Stefanki in September, he had nobody to turn to.
The calls kept continued the following week from Paris.
Henman admits that several saliant points, down the line from America, helped
him focus on specific areas, especially against Sebastien Grosjean and Roger
Federer.

The Briton won the tournament and looked a new man.
A few days later, Annacone popped up in Los Angeles at the women's end-of-
season championship.
He was assisting Jennifer Capriati on what, effectively, was a week's trial.
Although the former Australian Open champion sounded keen to further their
relationship, it clearly didn't work out and Annacone was back on the phone to
Henman.
This time they struck a deal - the American has agreed to come to England for
just over a week this month for winter training.
And, although Henman will travel alone to his first event of 2004, Annacone
will be at his side for the first time at the Australian Open.
Annacone's playing career was cut short when, after reaching number 12 in the
world, he was forced to retire with a back injury.
He took over coaching duties with Sampras on an interim basis in January 1995
when great friend Tim Gullikson was diagnosed with brain cancer.
Gullikson's death in 1996 had a major effect on Annacone, who had lost his best
friend to leukemia at the age of 19.
The partnership with Sampras proved the perfect next step for both men, and in
six years together the team won eight more Grand Slam titles.
After a short break in 2001, the pair were reunited ahead of Sampras' amazing
2002 US Open success that proved to be the end of his career.
Annacone explained his coaching relationship with Sampras in a recent interview
: "We don't sit there for like 20 minutes and talk about 50 things going all
around the globe.
"Usually, we'll start with him telling me about his past experience with an
upcoming opponent.
"Then I go over some of my notes, records and observations about the guy - what
works for him, what breaks down, what his comfort zone and his patterns are."
Henman proved in Paris that he can still play magnificent tennis and, at this
stage of his career, doesn't need to have his game remodelled or a particular
shot completely restructured.
His best results, interestingly, have come during his periods without a coach
(2001 Wimbledon after splitting from David Felgate and 2002 Paris, post-Stefanki
).
But Annacone will bring tactical and motivational qualities - a part-time
presence courtside, but always on the end of the phone for advice.
It could be just what is required to take Henman onto the next stage of his
career.
He's surprised us again, as he has a knack of doing, but this appointment may
prove to be one of the shrewdest of the year.

two-year partnership.
He went on to claim the biggest title of his career at the Paris Masters in
November, and has revealed he was speaking to Annacone during the event.
"We seem to have very similar views on both my game and tennis in general,"
said Henman.
The 29-year-old claimed after Paris that he was unlikely to work with another
coach, but has since had a change of heart.
"It's always nice to have somebody to be able to talk things through with whene
ver the need arises," Henman told his personal website.
I decided to give Paul a call to talk through a few things about my game
"This time I want to try and get the best of both worlds by working with a
coach on a part-time basis.
"Paul and I have been friends for a long time and we got to know each other
pretty well when he used to work with Pete (Sampras).
"I obviously have a lot of respect for him for what they both achieved together
.
"The real turning point for me was my loss to (David) Nalbandian in Basle where
I played very poorly.
"I decided to give Paul a call to talk through a few things about my game and
he was really helpful."
"Having had some time to reflect on my success in Paris and the year as a whole
, I've spoken to Paul at length and we've come to an agreement which we think
will enable us both to achieve our goals next year."
Annacone coached Sampras between 1995 and 2002 when the American was the domina
nt force in the game.
Henman expects to get on court with Annacone in the near future before joining
up wih him again in Australia in the new year.

「單飛」3個月之久的英國漢門，5日決定聘前山普拉斯教練安納康尼(Paul Ann
acone)擔任教練，但前題是建構在「兼差、顧問」性質上。
英國漢門是在今天9月美國公開賽之後，決定開除合作2年的教練史提方基(Lar
ry Stefanki)，原因是史提方基與自己的理念不合；當漢門決定單飛參加剩下來的賽
事後，他11月在巴黎名人賽不但奪得首座名人賽冠軍，也達成生平最高成就。
賽後現年29歲的漢門曾表示，1個人自我調整與練習是很孤單的，但自己又不
想被教練要求，所以不會考慮聘專任教練；但他也提到，與安納康尼討論後，從所得
到的啟發讓他達成這成就；他說：「我與安納康尼是老朋友，我們在比賽或網球專業
上的看法很相似，他的建議確實幫我奪得冠軍。」
於是他昨日於個人網頁上宣布，自己將聘安納康尼單任兼職教練；他說：「有
人能一起討論比賽是件好事；所以這刺我決定請這名老朋友來擔任兼職教練，當他擔
任山普拉斯教練時，我就跟他認識了，所以很了解彼此的想法；我想他應該能幫助我
打出更好的表現，明年我將與他一同征戰職業網壇。」
安納康尼是從1995年開始擔任美國山普拉斯教練，直到2002年山普拉斯奪得美
國公開賽冠軍後才離開；英國當地媒體均表示，安納康尼的經驗與建議能給漢門莫大
的幫助。
