The American loses his first match of 2003.
At the Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic in Scottsdale wild card entry Thomas
Enqvist improved his lifetime record to 5-4 against Agassi with the three-set
victory. The win over No. 2 Agassi in the ATP Entry Rankings is his best win
since beating No. 2 Pete Sampras in the quarterfinals of Indian Wells in
2000. It was also the Swede's second ATP match win of the season (2-6).
This marked Agassi's first match loss of the season after opening with
a 12-0 start.
Taylor Dent improved his match-winning streak to six with a 6-3, 7-5 victory
over Andrei Pavel. Dent, who was coming off his second career ATP title in
Memphis last month, fired 10 aces in the match.
In the second round Dent takes on countryman Cecil Mamiit, who surprised No.
8 seed Xavier Malisse 7-6(5), 7-6(3) after losing the previous two matches
against the Belgian.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Enqvist: "I think I played really, really well and I was going for my shots.
Obviously after I lost the tie-break I was disappointed but I played well the
rest of the match. I like to play Andre because we have some good matches and
rallies and it's a lot of fun."
我想我打得真的非常、非常地好。當我輸掉搶七後,我的確沮喪,但接下來我打得非常好。
我喜歡跟Andre比賽,因為我們有過很棒的對決比賽,它充滿了樂趣。
On recording his second win of the season "It's important because I've been
working hard and trying to stay away from injuries. I just need a lot of
matches. My big goal is to win a Grand Slam and that motivates me to play."
Agassi: "Thomas is a great player. He hits the ball big and he has good
patches on his serve and some good patches on his returns. When he puts
it all together he is pretty tough to beat."
"He got the early break in each set and when he started feeling the momentum,
he stepped up and I didn't raise my game to answer that. He got his nose in
front and never let me back in it."
"I had some chances. I won the first set and almost got my teeth back into
the second. It's credit to him the way he played in the third."

Dent: "The confidence is getting there and this was my first (ATP) match
outdoors this year. All in all I played a good match. I think it's all the
hard work that I've put in is paying off."
Mamiit: "I didn't have much of a game plan in Queen's last year when we last
played. My game plan today was to come in and work his backhand. I needed to
be mobile. I know I had a chance to win going into the tie-break and once I
got ahead I was in control."
