"I won a tournament that was important for me in Brazil," Kuerten said about
his title run at the Brasil Open last month. "I played well in Davis Cup.
A few tournaments, at Grand Slams especially, I played well, too. So I think
I saved my year in a few results, even after the surgery. Today, I think of
course it's tough to me."
Stepanek may be known primarily as a standout doubles player, partnering with
fellow Czech Jiri Novak. But he's achieved the best singles results of his
career in 2002, reaching the semifinals at Gstaad and Munich, and the
quarterfinals in Estoril and Doha. Of the nine times Stepanek's qualified
for an ATP event this year, he's lost the first round only once to Andrei
Pavel in Halle.
Kuerten said he had chances to win the match, but fell short on key points.
"I knew he would serve and volley a lot and be aggressive most of the time,
" the Brazilian said. "He competes very well. He was very enthusiastic on
the court."
