As a lucky loser, reached the second round of the French Open.
1997
Won his first ATP title in Bastad and reached the final in Ostrava.
Reached the quarterfinals at the French Open.
Underwent five-hour surgery Dec. 1 to correct irregular heart beat.
1998
Took his second title in Amsterdam and reached the final in Umag. Also,
helped his country to a Davis Cup title.
1999
Along with Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras, won an ATP-best five titles winning
in Orlando, Stuttgart, Umag (without dropping a set), Long Island and Shanghai.
Reached the fourth round at the U.S. Open before retiring with a back injury.
Finished the year as the No. 2 Swede behind Thomas Enqvist.
2000
Won five titles for the second consecutive year. The 10 victories in 1999-2000
is an ATP best. The five titles were won in Auckland, Tennis Masters Series
Rome, Bastad, Long Island and Shanghai.
Reached his first Grand Slam final at the French Open. Lost to Gustavo Kuerten
on his 11 match point. At the Australian Open, reached his first Grand Slam
semifinal before losing to Yevgeny Kafelnikov. Reached the fourth round at the
U.S. Open and the second round at Wimbledon. Lost in the third round of the
Sydney Olympics to Arnaud Di Pasquale.
Reached the quarterfinals in Tennis Masters Series events in Indian Wells and
Hamburg and the third round at Stuttgart to qualify for his first Tennis
Masters Cup.
Finished the year in the top 10 and as the No. 1 Swedish player for the first
time.
2001
Scheduled to undergo hip surgery in late August and will miss the rest of the
season.
Struggling on clay, he was knocked out of Tennis Masters Series Rome in the
first round and in the second round in Hamburg.
Reached the final in Sydney and lost to Lleyton Hewitt 6-4, 6-1. Reached the
final in Scottsdale only to lose to Francisco Clavet 6-4, 6-2.
