Wrist injury from round one sidelines the Russian

A wrist injury sustained in the first round forced Marat Safin to withdraw
from his scheduled third-round match against Rainer Schuettler Saturday. The
Russian, a finalist at the Australian Open last year, had a pain-killing
injection before his second match, but said that he was unable to take the
court today against Schuettler.

"In the first match I fell down and then I hit a backhand a little late and
I felt some pain," Safin said. "I didn't feel it during the second match
after they gave me an injection. But that night my wrist became really big
and I just couldn't move it, so there was no reason to play."

Safin said a doctor diagnosed the injury as a small tear to the ligament.
He expects to be sidelined for two to three weeks. Safin is unsure if he
will be available for Russia's opening Davis Cup tie, but has identified
Rotterdam, in the week of February 17, as his comeback tournament.
