September 21, 2002
HONG KONG (AP) -- American tennis star Michael Chang, who received a wild
card for next week's Hong Kong ATP Salem Open, said Saturday that `
`retirement is definitely on the cards'' for him.
The 30-year-old Chang, who is a crowd favorite in Asia, said that ``this
could possibly be the last time that I will be playing in Hong Kong. This
city has treated me well over the years and I hope this tournament will
be great for me.''
The three-time Hong Kong winner added that ``retirement is definitely on
the cards. The passion is still there but it is becoming more and more
difficult to win tournaments.''
His last tournament victory was back in 2000 in Los Angeles.
Having slipped to 120th in the world rankings, Chang was handed a tough
opening-round match in the Sept. 23-29 Salem Open after being drawn against
Spain's Alex Corretja, the fourth seed.
Top seed and world No. 4 Marat Safin of Russia was drawn against German
Lars Burgsmuller, while second-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain, ranked
sixth, drew Austrian Stefan Koubek in the opening round.
Spain's Carlos Moya, the third seed, will meet American Jan-Michael Gambill
