Late-comers for tuesday's first match between Elena Dementieva and Meilen Tu didn't miss out on a lot and were lucky not to freeze like the punctual part of the audience. It took Dementieva 159 minutes to the defeat the American player. This was the first match that Dementieva has played since the 15th of February and the first that she has won since February 2nd. What was the reason of such a long break? An odd rib injury. Odd, because Elena claims that she has broken three of her ribs during... a physical training session with her new coach. Dementieva complained about severe pain, but the coach kept telling her that this is what the exercise is about. In effect, he lost his job, and she - two months worth of practice. And it could have been even worse. - I kept wondering if I should come back to competitive tennis. - said the Russian. During this tough time, Dementieva could count on her friends from the Tour. They supported her by sending e-mails and text messages. It was a tough comeback, the Russian felt as if she was a beginner, hitting the ball against the wall. Playing in a tournament after a long break was even harder because of the severe wind and light snow, which to everyones surprise, appeared on the court today. - When it's this cold, I can feel my broken ribs. It's so nice to sit in a warm room - said Elena during the press conference. Dementieva was very glad to win the match today although she is aware that her tennis was rather poor. ============= WARSAW, May 1 (Reuters) - Elena Dementieva put retirement thoughts behind her on Tuesday after overcoming freezing temperatures and occasional snow flurries to beat American Meilen Tu 6-7 6-0 7-5 at the Warsaw Cup. The seventh seeded Russian, playing her first match since February, said she had considered walking away from the game after suffering a stress fracture of three ribs while working with a new physical trainer in Moscow. She felt so out of shape when it was time to begin her comeback that she considered whether she really wanted to make the effort. "It was a very disappointing and tough time for me," Dementieva told reporters. "I couldn't really do anything and it was time for me to think what I want to do in my life and did I want to come back or do something else. "I'm not that young. I'm 25 years old, and when something like that happens it's really difficult to start practising after not playing for six weeks. "I was not able to even go for a little run and I completely lost almost everything. For me it was like starting at the beginning, playing against the wall on my first practice. It was really difficult." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 211.21.246.66
