WTA Defends Yuri
Signal was an "innocent joke"
The WTA will not punish Yuri Sharapov for his throat-slitting motion
during his daughter Maria's stunning victory over world No. 1 Justine
Henin on Tuesday night. WTA chief executive Larry Scott spoke to the
Sharapova camp about the incident yesterday and concluded the motion
was an "innocent joke" between father and daughter.
"I am satisfied it was an innocent joke between Maria and Yuri about
the sweatshirt," Scott said.
Sharapova has said her father looks like an "assassin" for wearing
camouflage, army-print hoodie and dark glasses courtside throughout
the tournament. After Sharapova's triumphant win over Henin her
explanation for his throat-slitting motion was that he was doing up his
hoodie. "He put his hood on, yeah. What about the hood? Oh, when he
closed the hood? … God, you guys notice so many things," Sharapova
said.
"I saw him do that, because he was so excited. He loves that sweater."
Sharapov has never sat quietly in the stands during his daughter's career
and has received warnings from the chair umpires for coaching Sharapova
from the sidelines.
Sharapov was fined $2550 at last year's Australian Open after being
found guilty of giving illegal coaching signals to his daughter during
her quarter-final win over Russian compatriot Anna Chakvetadze.
His actions drew a call from prominent tennis identities, including
tennis great Tony Roche, for a crackdown on coaching from the
grandstands.
