Molik withdraws 13jan03 TOP-ranked Australian woman tennis star Alicia Molik retired midway through her first round match after injuring her right ankle. Molik clutched at her ankle while unsuccessfully chasing down a drop shot by Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan after leading 6-3 4-5 30-30. Molik, 21, took an injury timeout to have the ankle strapped, but was forced to withdraw after contesting only two more points, both of which she lost to hand Tulyaganova the second set. Last week Molik became the first Australian woman in eight years to win a WTA event when she was victorious at the Moorilla International in Hobart. ---------------------------------------------- 滿替她難過的 好不容易打出好成績說... 附加一篇昨天MARTINA NAVRATILOVA對她看法的文章... --------------------------------------------- Martina: Molik one to watch By Margie McDonald 13jan03 MARTINA NAVRATILOVA has rated Alicia Molik as a dangerous floater in the Australian Open draw, after her streak of wins against higher-ranked opponents. Navratilova has taken plenty of notice of Molik's improved form that has led to her wins over Daja Bedanova (ranked 41), Daniela Hantuchova (eight) and Silvia Farina Elia (16) at the Hopman Cup 10 days ago followed by her first WTA career title, the Moorilla International in Hobart, last Friday. There she downed No.1 seed Katarina Srebotnik (35) and defending champion Martina Sucha (63) before beating off the second seed Amy Frazier (42) in the final. "Alicia Molik is playing really good tennis. She could give anybody a run for their money," Navratilova said. "There's nothing better than confidence." Molik will have a ranking in the low 70s when the WTA list is published today, jumping from her position of just inside the top 100 last week. But her recent purple patch is not a one-off. The 21-year-old South Australian was ranked 45 in February last year and has a good record of knocking off top 20-ranked players. In the third round at Birmingham in 2001 Molik beat Jelena Dokic, then world No.16, in three sets and in the US Open of the same year she downed No.15 Magdalena Maleeva in three sets. She has reached the third round at three of the grand slam events -- Australian Open in 2000, French Open in 1999 and US Open in 2001. Her first win against a top 20 player was in the first round of the 1999 Adidas International when she beat then No.16 Natasha Zvereva. Molik's first round match is against Uzbekistan's Iroda Tulyaganova, former world No.16 but now lying at 57. The Australian is in Venus Williams' half of the draw but would probably have to get past Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne in the fourth round and Jennifer Capriati or Lindsay Davenport in the quarters to have a crack at the older Williams siste r in the semis. Success there would more than likely bring her face to face with top seed and world No.1 Serena Williams in the final. The pair met in the Hopman Cup final eight days ago with Molik losing 6-2 6-3. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.217.133.108
