No. 1 seed Rainer Schuettler took one step closer to winning his first title
of 2003 when he defeated Scott Draper 6-3, 6-3 in the AIG Japan Open Tennis
Championships quarterfinals Friday. By reaching the semifinals, the
27-year-old, who is currently sixth in the ATP Champions Race, increased the
distance between himself and Carlos Moya, who is in seventh position this week.
Cyril Saulnier made it into his first career ATP semifinal after fifth seed
Mark Philippoussis was forced to retire due to a sore neck, when the
Frenchman held a 5-2 lead in the opening set. Saulnier's countryman, second
seed Sebastien Grosjean defeated Jan-Michael Gambill 6-3, 7-6(4), while
Paradorn Srichaphan scored a narrow 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 win over Hyung-Taik Lee.
