Moya Keeps Houston Dream Alive, Federer, Henman Advance
Roger Federer easily moved into the semifinals at the CA Tennis Trophy on
Friday, defeating Finland's Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 6-3. The victory was the
defending champion's eighth straight win here in Vienna and his 65th win for
the year, an ATP best.
Federer has a date now with Max Mirnyi, who stopped Spain’s Feliciano Lopez
in straight sets. The power-serving Mirnyi didn’t face a single break point
all match. Mirnyi improved his record for the year to 38-24, and is looking
for his second title of the year. Earlier this season, he claimed the top
honor at Rotterdam, where he defeated Federer in the semifinals then went on
stop Raemon Sluiter in the final.
Tim Henman also remains in contention to collect his second title of the year,
outplaying Swede Jonas Bjorkman 6-1, 6-4. Henman won the first five games of
the match, including two breaks. Bjorkman was broken four times in the match,
while Henman lost his serve only once. After struggling for much of the first
half of the year, the Briton returned in the second half, winning in
Washington, reaching the semifinals at the Queen's Club in London and the
quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
Henman has a semifinal meeting with Carlos Moya, who edged Germany's Nicolas
Kiefer 6-4, 7-6(5) to advance to his seventh semifinal of the year. Now 7th
in the ATP Champions Race, Moya remains alive in the hunt for the last
remaining spots to the Tennis Masters Cup Houston. Rainer Schuettler became
the sixth player to qualify for the season-ending championship after winning
his quarterfinal match at the Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon on Friday. Moya has
already won three titles this year in Umag, Barcelona and Buenos Aires. He
also reached the final in Miami and the semifinals in Monte-Carlo and Bastad.

final to have a shot at the title.”
