Second seed Carlos Moya needed three sets to secure his spot in the second
round on Wednesday at the CA Tennis Trophy in Vienna. Moya, currently in 7th
position in the ATP Champions Race 2003, defeated Fernando Gonzalez of Chile,
6-4, 6-7(6), 6-1 in a tough opening round match. Moya remains a top contender
for one of the three remaining berths into the season-ending Tennis Masters
Cup Houston. The former World No. 1 needs to reach the semifinals or better
this week to improve his Champions Race points total and increase his chances
of snagging one of the elusive spots in Houston.
Tim Henman advanced into the Vienna quarterfinals by ending the title hopes of
No. 4 seed Sjeng Schalken, defeating the Dutchman in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
Schalken, who is currently 12th in the ATP Champions Race, had the opportunity
to move as high as 10th this week before his loss to Henman. Jarkko Nieminen a
lso moved into the quarterfinals after defeating Juan Ignacio Chela in three se
ts, 6-2, 6-7(10), 6-3.
Albert Costa won only his second match in more than three months by defeating
Sargis Sargsian in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. The No. 8 seeded Spaniard entered
the week 1-5 since reaching the semifinals at Roland Garros in early June.
Costa's recent slump could be coming to an end with his victory against
Sargsian, who reached the final in Moscow last week.
In other action, Austria's Stefan Koubek reached the next round with a 6-2, 4-6
, 7-6(3) victory against Nikolay Davydenko, while Max Mirnyi advanced to the
second round by defeating Jan-Michael Gambill, 6-4, 6-2 and Nicolas Kiefer
topped Austria wild card Alexander Peya, 7-5, 7-5.
HAAS HAPPY FOR SCHWARZENEGGER
German tennis star Tommy Haas was elated on Wednesday after seeing good friend
Arnold Schwarzenegger elected as the new governor of California. Haas' father,
Peter, attended grade school with Schwarzenegger while growing up in Graz,
Austria. "I'm very proud to see someone who came from such a small city in
Austria like Graz, where I spent several years of my childhood, be able to
accomplish so much and achieve the "American Dream." Haas said. "He's been a
great friend to me, and very supportive when my parents had the motorcycle
accident last year. He has frequently supported me when I've played tennis
out in Los Angeles, and I'm so excited about him winning, that I may even
consider buying a home in his state. I've sent a congratulatory message to
his office in L.A., and I hope to celebrate with him in person next time I
make it to California."
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Nicolas Kiefer: "I didn't feel so good today. I was a little bit tired. I just
came from Tokyo. I lost my concentration a bit but finally I made it. I have go
od memories from Vienna. Every time I come here I play good tennis."
About playing Melzer: "I think it's a big difference, he is a left-hander. He
played very well yesterday and I have to play much, much better to win. He will
have all the spectators behind him."
Fernando Gonzalez
If the interruption in the beginning of the third set disturbed him: "Not reall
y. I played great tennis today. The two breaks in the first set and the first
one in the last, it was because of me. I did it myself, it was not because of
that [the interruption]. He served unbelievable today."
Carlos Moya: "I'm very satisfied, it was a tough first round match. I'm very
happy with the way I played today."
"It was very difficult. I had my chances to win in the second set. When I lost
in the second set I was still very focused and broke him straight away. I serve
d well, that was the key to the match. I knew it wouldn't be easy for him to
keep such a high level all the match."
"The Davis Cup was amazing, I think that was what I needed."
About the Tennis Masters Cup: "It would be great to be in the Tennis Masters
Cup for the fourth time. I'm in a good position and I have to put in all efforts.
I'm going to give it 100 percent. I need to do well here and in the next weeks
in order to make it."
Stefan Koubek: "He played well, he ran back and forth and was running
everything down. He started to play better and better. I was playing aggressive
until 6-2, 4-2. I hit a lot of winners but unfortunately I got a bit too
passive after that. It was actually stupid of me, I didn't put enough pressure on him. I can'
t afford that, I knew I had to play aggressive."
"I had some back problems, I had to get a few injections before the match."
About playing Lopez: "He is tough. He is serving well and he can play very good
tennis."
Tim Henman: "To beat Sjeng is a really good win. I played two really good sets.
The middle one wasn't too good. I tried to over press in the second set, where
I made a few unforced errors. I was serving really well in the first and third
set."
"I'm really pleased with my overall performance. It's a good boost for my
confidence and a step in the right direction."
THURSDAY MATCHES
Defending champion Roger Federer and No. 2 seed Carlos Moya will be among the
players in action on Thursday at the CA Tennis Trophy in Vienna. Federer, the
No. 1 seed, will attempt to improve on his 14-3 career mark in Vienna against
Slovak Republic's Karol Beck. A win against Beck would give Federer an ATP-best
64 match wins this year. The 22-year-old from Switzerland is aiming for his
seventh straight win in Vienna in his first meeting with Beck. Beck scored a
big win in his first round match, saving two match points en route to defeating
James Blake in three sets.
Moya, making his fourth trip to Vienna, will take on American Vince Spadea in
his second round match. The Spaniard rallied to defeat Fernando Gonzalez in
his first round match and will be playing Spadea for only the second time.
Though they have both been scouring the waters of the ATP circuit for the
past eight years, Moya and Spadea met for the first time earlier this year in
Miami with Moya taking the match in three sets.
No. 5 seed Agustin Calleri will also be in action as he takes on hard-hitting
Belarussian Max Mirnyi. Calleri, currently 20th in the ATP Champions Race 2003,
has an opportunity to move up the Race leaderboard with a good week in Vienna.
Players in positions 14th through 19th are either inactive or have already lost
this week, opening the door for Calleri to improve his position. No. 8 seed
Albert Costa will face Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman for the first time since 1997.
The only two previous meetings between these two players came that year with
Bjorkman winning in Scottsdale and Costa prevailing in Monte Carlo.
