Players call for severe punishment for any match-riggers

MADRID, Oct 13 (Reuters) - Senior tennis professional Wayne Ferreira called on Monday for the sport's governing body to hand out severe punishments to any player found guilty of match-rigging.
The ATP, which runs the men's professional tour, is looking into allegations of match-fixing following a newspaper report claiming that some players had thrown matches for financial gain.
Ferreira, at 32 one of the game's elder statesmen, said he had no idea if the claims were true but warned that the sport would suffer if they were proved to be correct.
"I think it would be terrible for the game," the South African said after his first-round match at the Madrid Masters on Monday.
"I haven't really heard much about it except what I read this morning but if it is happening I think it should be stopped.
"My opinion is that there are rules that are made and if they are being broken they should be enforced. The people that do break these rules need to be punished.
"If somebody is taking drugs he needs to be punished. If somebody is betting on himself the rule states three years suspension. If someone is doing that, the rules are there to be used."
Ferreira said he found it hard to believe any player could bet against himself in a match.
"I really don't know if this whole thing has been blown out of proportion," he said.
"I don't know if anybody would bet on himself to lose. I personally couldn't do it. I don't know if anyone else could."
Under ATP rules, any player found guilty of match-fixing would be banned for three years and fined $100,000.
Finland's Jarkko Nieminen, another player in action in Madrid on Monday, said if someone did receive such a ban he would not be welcomed back with open arms.
"It's one of the worst (things a player could do)," Nieminen said. "It's the same as if someone is cheating by using doping.
"It would be very hard for a player to come back."
He added: "It's good that the penalties are very big. That's how it should be."
