WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Federer: "I'm happy to be in contention, to have a chance to become No. 1. It's
a pity I missed my chance in Montreal and Cincinnati and the US Open. But for
me it's just important now to play a good, solid indoor season. Last year was
good, but I want to do even better this year. It was a perfect start with
Vienna. This tournament and Paris are very important for me. Basel too... Then
obviously the Masters Cup. I'm going to try to come as close as I can to win
all of them."
On his next opponent, Mardy Fish
At Wimbledon I beat him in four sets. He's a dangerous player. I think he has
improved. It was a good showing in Cincinnati. He's got a big game, big serve.
He takes chances on the return. You better get that first serve in."
Roddick: "I thought I played a great first set. I don't know if I could have
played a better one. And second set, I felt like I was playing better than he
was, but then he just snuck out the tiebreaker. He made a lot of first serves
in the tiebreaker. I don't think I had an unforced error in the breaker, but
I still lost it. That's definitely a credit to him.
I was just trying to hang around in the third. I got an opportunity. I don't
think he hit as good of a volley on break point as he would have wanted.
"There are going to be times in my career where I'm not playing well, so I
might as well try to take advantage of the times when I am. Even though I've
accomplished a lot of my goals this year, I'm still in the hunt for No. 1.
That's definitely a big motivation for me."
Robredo: "I only remember 3 (of the seven set points in the first set). It was
a pity because I double-faulted. Luck played an important role. I wanted more
winners, which I wasn't able to do. But it was a tough set. It's very difficult
to return the ball afterwards, especially if he's winning. But I think I played
well throughout the match. Lately I haven't played so well. So now I feel I'm
back to this level; I hope to stay at this level and win a few matches."
Srichaphan: "I went into the match with a lot of respect for him (Costa); he's
a great player and a former Grand Slam champion, so I had to be at my best."
On reaching Houston:
"My goal is to finish in the Top 10. I'm not going to put pressure on myself to
qualify for Houston, but it would be great if I could make it. If I don't, I
will just go home and have a great time there."
Ferrero: "I saw him nervous with his double-fault. It wasn't quite normal for
him. I tried to break his serve no matter what happened, and then keep fighting.
It wasn't really clear I could win, I could beat him. That's never to be taken
for granted."
On retaining his World No. 1 ranking: "If I lose, I lose the No. 1 in the
ranking. I cannot be obsessed with that idea. Everyone has lost No. 1 at one
stage of their career. People that are behind me are also strong, so it's
difficult to keep on the top forever. I try hard every day to stay there. But
today wasn't pressure. It wasn't a matter of not having a good day. I'm not
adapted to a fast court like this. I hope tomorrow I'm going to be better, play
a more complete match."
On having a bye in the first round: "If you play a match before, you get a bit
more prepared. But a bye is also an advantage. It has advantages and
disadvantages. You have to accept it."
Ferreira: "I played well. I deserved to win that match. I played better than he
did. I had more opportunities. I just didn't win it. I think he had a lot of
help from the crowd."
Moya: "I'm not happy with the way I played, but I'm happy to win. I wasn't
comfortable at any time. I took advantage of one of his errors and beat him.
I hope it was only lapses of the first round."
THURSDAY MATCHES
Juan Carlos Ferrero will take a commanding 7-0 record against Felix Mantilla
into the all-Spanish third-round clash in Madrid on Thursday. Ferrero has
needed to go the distance in six of those seven meetings, but when they last
met at Roland Garros, Ferrero dismissed Mantilla 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 in the round of
16 and continued on to win the title. Ferrero qualified for Tennis Masters Cup
Houston during the US Open, but he knows that every match counts in his three-
way battle with Andy Roddick and Roger Federer for the year-end No. 1 title.
Roger Federer is wary of Mardy Fish's power ahead of their match. Big-serving
Fish was the only player to take a set from Federer at Wimbledon. He also
reached the final of the last Tennis Masters Series tournament in Cincinnati,
where he held two match points against eventual champion Roddick. Federer has
won six titles in 2003, including indoor titles in Marseille and Vienna.
Andy Roddick has won 20 consecutive tournament matches (he lost a Davis Cup
match to Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty last month) dating back to his first Tennis
Masters Series title run in Montreal. The second seed has never played Nicolas
Massu, who has reached four clay court finals this season.
