Ferrero hangs on to top spot with victory over Paradorn
news from: http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/031017/323/ebfsv.html
MADRID (AFP) - Juan Carlos Ferrero put on a show of pride
for his home public producing a 6-4, 6-2 victory over
Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan to hang onto his world number
one ranking.
The quarter-final victory left the French Open winner safe
for this week from attacks by rivals Andy Roddick and Roger
Federer.
Had Ferrero gone down, Roddick, a second round loser here
this week, would have taken over the top spot.
"When I went onto court, I forgot all about keeping my
number one place," said the winner, now 64-15 with three
titles this season.
"If I thought about the ranking, I wouldn't be relaxed.
I just try to beat the player that I'm facing, I just want
to win the match. Anything else would be a mistake."
The Spanish top seed was relentless in his strikes against
the big-hitting game of Paradorn.
But Ferrero's 65-minute win, on the back of 14 winners and
26 unforced errors from his opponent, assured no change at
the top - for the moment.
"It's very important for me to stay number one. I'm in Spain,
I want to show everybody what good tennis I can play."
Ferrero came through on cue to beat Paradorn, against whom
he now holds a 3-1 record.
Swiss Wimbledon champion Federer, another tough contender for
the top ranking place, emerged victorious after a thriller in
which he subdued Spain's Feliciano Lopez 4-6, 7-6 (7/3), 6-4.
The third seed had to struggle after losing the opening set
then profited from a Lopez double-fault to win the second.
He started the third with a break, held it as Lopez saved a
pair of match points in the ninth game and concluded a massive
effort with his ninth ace to win his eighth straight match.
The holder of six titles, including last week in Vienna, plays
Ferrero on Saturday for a place in the final.
"I hung in there, I could have lost in straight sets, but I
battled hard and I gave everything that I had," said the Swiss,
who won his 70th match of the season.
"I knew this was a big match and it will be an even bigger
one tomorrow. But I can only concentrate on the match I'm
playing, I can't look too far ahead.
"I'm playing a guy who's also in contention. I have no idea
how the numbers are for us. I just hope I can pay well tomorrow
and beat him."
Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean lost ground in the race for a
possible place in the season-ending championships, falling to a
3-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-2 defeat to Morocco's Younes El Aynaoui.
The comeback performance from the 15th-seeded El Aynaoui left
Grosjean in tenth place in the race to the eight-man Masters
Cup next month in Houston.
The Frenchman, a semi-finalist here at the inaugural edition
in 2002, was bidding for his fifth semi of the season.
El Aynaoui will Saturday play Nicolas Massu, Chilean conquer
of Roddick, who came through a three-hour marathon to oust
fellow South American Juan Chela 6-7 (5/7), 6-4, 6-4
