WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Ferrero: "I think I was served pretty good I got only one break against his
serve. You know, that is 6-4. On indoor courts, everything passes very quickly,
you know. We played a good match. In the third set, I think it was the same as
the first set: one break, that's it. It was an important match today for me
because I proved to myself that I can defeat one of the best players indoors."
On reaching the final of Madrid: "It means that I'm working pretty hard. This
year I played a lot of matches. I won a lot of matches - indoor courts, clay
courts, hard courts, grass courts. It means that I'm playing very good on all
surfaces."
On Massu next: "I think his tennis has been very consistent, without many
unforced errors. Besides, he's very fit physically, and has good stamina. It's
true that he hits the ball very well. I think I'll be able to put up with it."
Federer: "I wasn't too happy with my game. A few moments it was all right, but
it was a little bit too much up and down. You know, I took chances on my serves
and double-faulted. That shouldn't happen. I put myself in difficulties
situations. He wasn't really controlling the match, I was. I was the one who
was taking chances."
On the race for No. 1: "This is why I think this match hurts me, you know,
because I know he's taking an edge on me for the year end [No. 1]. For me to be
No. 1 in the world at the end of the year, I don't know how close I am. It was
just important to play a good indoor season, then see if I have a chance at The
Masters. That's what I'm doing. I'm very happy to have started well in the
indoor season with a win in Vienna and the semis here. I'm happy."
Massu, on reaching his first TMS final: "Maybe for the people it's a big
surprise. For me, it's a surprise, but not too much because I've play tennis
every day, I've worked hard. I've always tried to do this. When I was young,
I always dreamed about beating the top players in the world. Now I have a good
week. But I want to win this tournament."
El Aynaoui on his injury: "I didn't want to make an injection yesterday to get
the pain out. There's still one tournament to go. Today I was not a hundred
percent. Sometimes you can get out of it and win some matches, even if you're
not at your top. But against Massu, I was a bit short. I was expecting that he
was going to be a little bit tired, but he played well."
FINAL PREVIEW
Sunday's final sees world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero take on first-time TMS
finalist Nicolas Massu of Chile. Ferrero is playing in his seventh final of
2003 and is seeking his fourth title after winning at the TMS Monte Carlo (d.
Coria), Roland Garros (d. Verkerk) and Valencia (d. Rochus). The Spaniard, who
will overtake Andy Roddick in the ATP Champions Race if he claims the title
here, is bidding for his first career indoor Tennis Masters Series title. All
three of his Tennis Masters Series titles (Rome '01, Monte Carlo '02, Monte
Carlo '03) to date have been won on clay. He holds a 3-1 head-to-head series
lead over Massu, with the Chilean旧 only win coming on a hardcourt in Indian
Wells in 2001.
Nicolas Massu will be playing in his fifth ATP final of 2003, with his previous
four finals all coming on clay. The Chilean continues to excel in his
breakthrough year on the ATP circuit, in which he has claimed titles in
Amersfoort (d. Sluiter) and Palermo (d. Mathieu) and reached finals in
Kitzbuhel (l. to Coria) and Bucharest (l. to Sanchez). Should he win on Sunday,
Massu will become the second Chilean, behind Marcelo Rios (5 TMS titles), to
win a Tennis Masters Series title.
