TENNIS MASTERS MADRID
MADRID, SPAIN October 12, 2003
MAIN DRAW PREVIEW
All 16 seeded players received byes into the second round of the
Tennis Masters Madrid on Sunday. All eyes will be on home favorite
and top seed Juan Carlos Ferrero, as he seeks to hold on to his No.
1 ranking. Ferrero will have a tough second round match as he awaits
the winner of the match between Wayne Ferreira and Ivan Ljubicic.
Ferrero, the reigning French Open champion, will have his eyes set
on capturing his second Tennis Masters Series title of 2003, following
his win in Monte Carlo (d. Guillermo Coria) earlier in the year.
At the other end of the draw, American Andy Roddick awaits the
winner of the match between fellow American, James Blake, and
Max Mirnyi of Belarus. Roddick will be looking for a strong run
in Madrid in his bid to overtake No. 1 Ferrero in the ATP Entry
Ranking. The American is bidding for an unprecedented third consecutive
Tennis Masters Series title, following his wins in Montreal (d. David
Nalbandian) and Cincinnati (d. Mardy Fish). Roddick, the US Open
champion, has won 20 of his last 21 matches. He is seeded to meet
Gustavo Kuerten in the third round.
Third-seeded Roger Federer is coming off a win in Vienna (d.
Carlos Moya) last week and will face the winner of the all-
Spanish first round match between wild cards Alex Corretja
and Rafael Nadal. Federer has now won an equal-best six titles
in 2003 and posts a best 67-14 match record for the year. In
what would be a rematch of the Vienna final last week, the
Swiss star is seeded to meet Carlos Moya in the quarterfinals.
Rainer Schuettler, the No. 4 seed, comes into the Tennis Masters
Madrid having won two consecutive titles, in Tokyo (d. Sebastien
Grosjean) and Lyon (d. Arnaud Clement). The German, who qualified
for the Tennis Masters Cup Houston last week, will be looking to
continue his 10-match winning streak as he awaits the winner of
the match between American Robby Ginepri and Belgian qualifier
Olivier Rochus in the second round.
The hunt for the final two Tennis Masters Cup Houston spots will
heat up between No. 5 seed Carlos Moya, No. 6 seed Sebastian
Grosjean and Thai sensation Paradorn Srichaphan. Moya, a winner
of three titles in 2003, faces the winner of the match between
Gaston Gaudio and Jarkko Nieminen. Grosjean enters the tournament
without a title win in 2003, but he歓l be looking to for a second
career Tennis Masters Series shield to add to his trophy cabinet,
following his win in Paris in 2001. The Frenchman will play the
winner of the match between Mikhail Youzhny and qualifier David
Ferrer. Srichaphan, a winner in Long Island this year, will face
either Albert Costa or Fernando Gonzalez as he hopes to maintain
the pressure on his rivals for the final two places to Houston.
SPANISH STARS SET FOR CENTER STAGE ON MONDAY
The Tennis Masters Madrid gets underway on Monday with a series
of Spanish stars in action on the Pista Central. In a Spanish
battle of generations, 17-year-old Rafael Nadal will face veteran
Alex Corretja in a match that will be sure to thrill the home crowd.
This will be the second meeting between these two, with Corretja
emerging the winner in three sets in Barcelona earlier this year.
Corretja has a modest 10-21 match record in 2003 and received a wild
card into this event. He will be hoping to snap a seven-match losing
streak against the young Spanish pretender. Corretja reached the
third round last year at the Tennis Masters Madrid with wins over
Fernando Vicente and Yevgeny Kafelnikov. Nadal has an impressive
14-8 record in his first full year at ATP level, and is playing
in his first Tennis Masters Madrid.
Also in action will be Spaniard Feliciano Lopez who takes on
Argentina旧 Mariano Zabaleta. Lopez trails the Argentine 0-1
in their head-to-head series with their only previous match
coming at Roland Garros this year. The Spaniard will be hoping
for a similar run at this year旧 Tennis Masters Madrid as in
2002, where he posted wins over Arnaud Clement and Younes El
Aynaoui before falling to eventual champion Andre Agassi in
7-5 in the third set. Zabaleta is 33-21 in 2003 and was a
winner in Bastad in July. He will be looking for his first ATP
match win since defeating Flavio Saretta in the third round of
Cincinnati.
In their first career meeting, 19-year-old Spanish wild card
Fernando Verdasco takes on Nicolas Massu of Chile, a winner
of two ATP titles this year in Amersfoort (d. Sluiter) and
Palermo (d. Mathieu). The Chilean has a 30-16 match record
in 2003. Verdasco is enjoying the best season of his young
career, having reached the third round at the TMS Miami and
at the US Open.
In other matches on the Pista Central on Monday will be
two Argentines, Gaston Gaudio and Juan Ignacio Chela. In
the first match of the day, Gaudio takes on Finnish Jarkko
Nieminen whom he leads 2-0 in their head-to-head series.
Chela will take on Spanish qualifier Alberto Martin in the
second meeting of 2003, with the Argentine winning their
last meeting in Barcelona.
