Serena comeback on hold
Serena has not played since Wimbledon last year
Serena Williams has pulled out of the Hopman Cup team event, which begins on 3
January in Perth.
The American says that she wants to concentrate on preparing for the defence of
her title in the Australian Open, which begins on 19 January.
World number three Williams will be replaced by compatriot Lindsay Davenport, w
ho partners James Blake for the defending champions.
Neither Williams nor her sister Venus have played since Wimbledon last July.
Twenty-two-year-old Serena had knee surgery in August while Venus, who is also
planning to return at the Australian Open, has had a long lay-off with an abdom
inal tear.
"Serena regrets not being able to come back to defend her title, but we have a
wonderful replacement in Lindsay Davenport," said tournament organiser Paul
McNamee.
