Paes ruled out for season
Indian doubles player Leander Paes will not play again this year as he
recovers from a brain lesion.
Paes, who won the Wimbledon mixed doubles title with Martina Navratilova
last month, was admitted to an Orlando clinic in August after suffering
severe headaches.
There had been fears that Paes had a malignant brain tumour but doctors
treating the 30-year-old have now ruled that out.
"We report that Leander Paes is suffering from neurocysticercosis. We
are relieved that this is not a cancerous tumour," the MD Anderson Cancer
Center said in a statement on its website on Monday.
The news that Paes would not play again until next year was confirmed by
Indian Davis Cup captain Ramesh Krishnan.
"Leander will not play until next year," he said.
"He has some more tests scheduled for next week. It will be tough to get
back."
Paes and Navratilova won the mixed doubles at the Australian Open in
January and followed up with success at Wimbledon, giving Navratilova a
record-equalling 20th championship at the All England Club.
In the course of his career, Paes, who is a hero in his native sports-mad
Calcutta, has won 27 men's doubles titles.
They include the 1999 and 2001 French Open and the 1999 Wimbledon, all
of which were won with long-time partner Mahesh Bhupathi.
