Aussies choose grass for final Australia have opted to play this year's Davis Cup final against Spain on grass. The Spanish clay-court specialists fare less well on grass, which has been Australia's preferred choice. Lleyton Hewitt won at Wimbledon in 2002 and Mark Philippoussis was a finalist at SW19 this year. A portable grasscourt will now be installed at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena for the final, which begins on 28 November. Tennis Australia president Geoff Pollard told ABC Radio: "We haven't formally told the International Tennis Federation and the Spanish Federation, which we have to do by Monday. "But I think enough clues have been given that the answer will be grass." The portable grass surface was used for Australia's 2001 final against France, which the hosts lost 3-2. The grass broke up through the five matches of the 2001 final, causing uneven bounce and a shifting surface. All three of Spain's other Davis Cup finals have been against Australia. They lost 4-1 on grass in Sydney in 1965 and Brisbane in 1967 before breaking through for their first-ever title on Barcelona's clay courts in 2000. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 203.219.101.22 ※ 編輯: zerkchu 來自: 203.219.101.22 (09/25 22:25)
