Agassi is joined in San Jose by Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan, who holds the
No. 2 seed
The first North American tournament on the 2003 ATP circuit takes place at the
HP Pavilion in San Jose, led by ATP Champions Race leader and Australian Open
champion Andre Agassi. No. 2 seed Paradorn Srichaphan, who was selected last
year's ATP Most Improved Player of the Year and the recipient of the Stefan
Edberg Sportsmanship Award, has won three ATP titles since last August. Other
seeds in the field are: No. 3 James Blake, No. 4 Jan-Michael Gambill, No. 5
Todd Martin, No. 6 Davide Sanguinetti, No. 7 Nikolay Davydenko and No. 8
Kenneth Carlsen.
ATP Champions Race 2003 Update:
Current Race leader Andre Agassi returns to San Jose for the 11th time in
his career. The American, who captured his eighth Grand Slam title in
Australia last month, has a 37-point cushion at the top of the Leader
Board as he bids for a fifth Siebel Open crown this week. No. 2 seed
Paradorn Srichaphan is tied for 10th. Here is a look at this year's
ATP Champions Race:

2002 Final: Top seed Lletyon Hewitt saved two match points before
defeating No. 2 seed and four-time tournament winner Andre Agassi 4-6,
7-6(6), 7-6(4) in the final. Hewitt, who saved four match points in his
second round victory over Paradorn Srichaphan, saved his first match point
at 5-6 in the second-set tie-break and his second with an ace up the middle
at 4-5 in the third set. "It's definitely up there with some of the other
big wins in my career贸t doesn't get much better than that,? said Hewitt,
who won the first of five titles during the season.
Main Draw Highlights: A Look at the Seeds
(1) Andre Agassi - The 32-year-old Las Vegas native is bidding for a fifth
title in San Jose. He has accumulated a 39-6 match record while putting
together a 4-3 record in finals (runner-up last two years). He won in
his first appearance in 1990 when the tournament was held in San Francisco.
The top seed is playing in his first tournament since the Australian Open,
which he won for the fourth time after defeating Rainer Schuettler.
(2) Paradorn Srichaphan - The No. 1 player from Thailand opened the season
by capturing his third career ATP title in Chennai, India (d. Kucera). The
highest-ranked player (No. 13) in the history of Asian men's tennis lost to
eventual champion Lleyton Hewitt in the second round last year after holding
four match points.
(3) James Blake - The 23-year-old American enters San Jose from his Davis
Cup performance in Zagreb, Croatia where he went 1-1 in singles in the U.S.
loss to Croatia. He turned in his best Grand Slam result at the Australian
Open, reaching the 4th RD (l. to Schuettler).
(4) Jan-Michael Gambill - The 25-year-old American has reached the semifinals
in San Jose the last two years, losing to Agassi in 2001 and Hewitt last year.
He opened the season with a runner-up effort in Doha, Qatar (l. to Koubek)
after not dropping a set in four matches en route to the final.
(5) Todd Martin - The second-oldest player in the field at 32 is playing in
his first tournament of the year. He and his wife Amy became parents for the
first time on Jan. 21 with the birth of son, Jack. Last season he advanced
to the quarterfinals in San Jose, losing to eventual champion Lleyton
Hewitt.
(6) Davide Sanguinetti - The No. 1 Italian is coming off a career-best
season in which he won two ATP titles and finished a year-end high No. 46.
Last year he lost to Andy Roddick in three sets in the second round.
(7) Nikolay Davydenko - The 21-year-old Russian opened the season by
capturing his first career ATP title in Adelaide. Last weekend he made
his Davis Cup debut against the Czech Republic, leading Russia to a 3-2
victory with a five-set victory over Radek Stepanek in the fifth and
decisive rubber.
(8) Kenneth Carlsen - The veteran Dane comes into San Jose with a 1-4 match
record on the season. Last year he won his second career ATP title in Tokyo,
defeating Magnus Norman, his first round opponent.
Tournament Tidbit: Andre Agassi旧 current coach Darren Cahill won the title
in 1991, defeating Agassi旧 former coach Brad Gilbert in the final.
