Report: Sony Ericsson name to grace Tour
Associated Press
NEW YORK -- Cell phone maker Sony Ericsson agreed to become the global title
sponsor for the WTA Tour in a deal worth $88 million over six years, a tennis
source told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
The renaming of the women's pro tennis circuit to "The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour"
will be announced Wednesday, the source said on condition of anonymity.
It's a sign of resurgence for the tour, which had been without a global sponsor
for the 2003 and 2004 seasons, relying instead on regional deals. In the past,
Virginia Slims, Kraft General Foods, Corel and, most recently, Sanex have had
their company names attached to the women's tour.
In an interview with the AP in May, tour chief executive Larry Scott cited
three recent regional sponsorship deals worth a combined $15 million over five
years, and said, "We haven't been more successful from a marketing perspective
than we have in the past three months."
Under the new deal, the season-ending event will be called The Sony Ericsson
WTA Tour Championships, and the sponsor presumably would have a say in where
it's played in future years. The tournament has been in Los Angeles since 2002.
And Sony Ericsson -- a joint venture between Sweden's LM Ericsson and Japan's
Sony Corp. -- probably will be allowed to place its logo on or near the nets or
courts at tournaments throughout the season.
"At this point, I'm not in a position to comment," said the tour's vice
president of business affairs, Andrew Walker.
A Sony Ericsson spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The deal was first reported by SportsBusiness Journal.
