Scud gives up on Open
January 13, 2005
MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS today officially withdrew from the Australian Open with an a
dductor muscle injury, organisers said.
The one-time Wimbledon and US Open finalist suffered the injury playing for Aus
tralia in the Hopman Cup in Perth earlier this month.
Philippoussis, 28, had been receiving chiropractic treatment in a bid to be rea
dy for the opening grand slam tournament of the year starting in Melbourne on M
onday.
Philippoussis' injury – sustained in a match against Dutchman Peter Wessels –
could not have come at a worse time as he attempts to emerge from a troubled y
ear on and off the court.
Philippoussis has plunged in the latest rankings to 110 after starting last yea
r ranked nine.
His absence from the centenary Australian Open leaves world No.3 Lleyton Hewitt
as the only realistic hope for a home-grown male winner of the event.
Philippoussis will now have to prove his fitness before Australia's first-round
Davis Cup tie against Austria in Sydney in March.
